What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral often found in water sources and vegetables. Its unique chemical composition enables it to bind with dental enamel, strengthening the tooth in the process. The extra reinforcement helps shield the tooth from the acids that oral bacteria produce, and also helps to repair early stages of decay.
How Does Fluoride Treatment Work?

Technically, you can “treat” your teeth to fluoride by using a toothpaste that contains the mineral, or by including more vegetables in your diet. A professional fluoride treatment, though, is typically applied as part of a routine checkup and cleaning. After your hygienist polishes off your pearly whites, they’ll brush a gel, foam, or varnish around your mouth. This is the fluoride, and once it has rested on your teeth long enough to be absorbed, your hygienist will ask you to rinse. That’s all it takes!
Who Benefits from Fluoride Treatment the Most?

Fluoride treatments are most commonly applied to children’s smiles. Since they’re still learning how to best take care of their pearly whites, it’s a good idea to give them some extra protection. That said, adults can benefit from fluoride treatments, too! If you have diabetes, chronic dry mouth, are pregnant, or have a higher risk of cavities for other reasons, we’d be happy to help you manage your oral health by including fluoride applications as part of your regular checkups and cleanings.
