What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that protects against cavities so that your child’s back teeth can remain safe while they improve their brushing habits. As a clear liquid coating, our dentists apply it to the chewing surfaces of teeth to minimize cavity-causing bacteria from penetrating the enamel.
These molars and premolars contain various pits, grooves, and fissures, making it easy for them to trap food particles. If allowed to burrow deep into these areas, demineralization can occur, resulting in dental caries.
Over time, your child will begin to refine their oral hygiene skills, ensuring these teeth will be properly cleaned once the sealants come off.
How Are Dental Sealants Placed?

The entire sealant process is quick and painless, requiring no anesthesia or sedation. After making sure your child’s teeth are clean, we will dry them so that the liquid application will adhere correctly. Taking a small portion of the dental sealant, we will apply it directly onto the chewing surface of their back teeth. A special light is then used to harden the sealant so that it remains firm and durable, creating an effective barrier over the surface.
This should take no more than 15-20 minutes, and your child will appreciate the comfortable and painless visit.
Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants can be used on patients of all ages; however, children are the most common candidates. This is because they can have the hardest time reaching the back of their mouth while brushing, so their chewing teeth (molars and premolars) can become susceptible to cavities and decay.
The typical age for dental sealants is between 5 and 14; however, it’s common for dentists to suggest this type of preventive treatment as soon as the child’s first molars erupt. If you are an adult and prone to cavities, you are welcome to ask a member of our team about receiving dental sealants.
