Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces that many people prefer for its invisible appearance. These clear aligners can help wearers close gaps between their teeth so their smiles have a more uniform appearance. Though they can improve the look of your smile, can they also correct bite issues? Read on to learn how Invisalign works and the bite problems that it can be used to correct.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses pressure to encourage the movement of your teeth into the correct position. This is done using a series of aligners that are replaced every one to two weeks. Each aligner is designed to encourage a specific type of movement. In cases where aligners alone cannot accomplish the necessary tooth movement, they may be combined with attachments to further concentrate pressure on an area in order.

Underbite

This occurs when the bottom teeth sit in front of the upper ones when someone’s mouth is closed. This usually results from the lower jaw growing faster than the upper one and make it difficult to eat and speak properly. Underbites can cause excessive tooth wear. Invisalign can be used with attachments like rubber bands to guide the jaw into place. Traditional orthodontics may be necessary for those with severe bite issues or older patients.

Crossbite

A posterior crossbite occurs when the lower back teeth fit over the ones of the top jaw. An anterior crossbite happens is when the lower front teeth fit over the ones of the top jaw. Invisalign can fix slight crossbites, like those that involve one or two teeth. Traditional braces are the better option for crossbites involving multiple teeth.

Open Bite

An open bite is characterized by the top and bottom teeth not touching when one’s mouth is closed. They are one of the least common bite problems and occur when the jawbone grows irregularly. Additionally, open bites can result from childhood habits like thumb, finger, or tongue sucking. These can all prevent normal biting and cause tooth eruption. Open bites can also make it difficult to eat properly. Luckily, Invisalign can move the teeth so they meet correctly.

Overbite

An overbite is when the teeth stick out too far. Though it’s normal to have a slight overbite, larger ones leave the top teeth susceptible to wear and damage. Patients under 12 can use Invisalign with a mandibular advancement appliance to correct overbites by moving the jaw into place as it grows. Those over age 12 can usually use clear aligners with elastics to gradually move the jaw into position.

If you have one of the above bite problems and think Invisalign may be right for you, reach out to your dentist to find out. you’ll be on your way to the smile of your dreams before you know it!
